Here we are just a few days from the big game being held in New Jersey between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. I felt it only right that we honor the Architects and design team that put this masterpiece together. What a coordinated effort that must have been! 360 Architecture states on their website that the New Meadowlands Stadium is one of the greenest venues in sports. This team thought of everything right down to the wifi. Here is an interesting factoid: the owners are actually the Jets and the Giants. The 1.6 billion dollar budget was provided with private funds. Of course they went over budget. Whew!
When we think of architecture, many of us are just interested in the finished product. Today I want to draw your thoughts to the massive undertaking of skill and synergy that was applied to this project. First of all, you have two major football franchises getting together with none other than the EPA to come up with a green project. Even though the new stadium is much larger than the one it replaced, it uses 30% less energy than the old one. Now that takes a lot of engineers, electricians, and…..I could go on….a lot of calculations. I once read that a book was written by a bunch of students on twitter. I wonder if the people involved in this project used twitter for any part of this project?
The stadium’s design team was BruceMau Design, Rockwell Group, 360 Architects and Ewingcole.
Since the owners represent two different colors, the outer walls are constructed out of louvers. Overgaard Ltd. of Hongkong and Architectural Design of Demoines, Iowa is responsible for the design and manufacture of the louvers. It is an aluminum hanging system which is very cleverly illuminated by interior lighting that switches colors to show the Giants blue colors on a home game and the Jets green color when they are playing at home. This idea started in Munich, Germany where Munich’s two major soccer clubs – also known as football clubs, share the Allianz Arena. Genius! They only take a few hours to change.
In closing, facts that are quite interesting about the stadium:
- It is the largest NFL Stadium in total seating capacity
- 2014 is the first time a superbowl will be played in the New York metropolitan area
- The Denver Broncos playing the Seattle Seahawks is the first time a superbowl will be played in an arena in a cold climate that doesn’t have a dome
- Colorado and Washington are the only two states that have just legalized recreational cannibus
- It is the only NFL stadium shared by two teams
